Nowdays I couldn't imagine doing more than just exercise in the alps, i.e. fastpacking, hike until you are completely exhausted, then hike another 15k until you find a spot where you can put up the tent without being bothered. Run home the next day. Repeat next weekend.
I definitely don't get any sense of being in nature anymore. It's a cultural landscape.
