You take the stack of boxes off each other and pull out every single frame. This lets out tons of honey odor everywhere for a long time. At best you do this every two weeks, but that's a major pain so many people do it like once a month. Regardless, when you are around the hives on a warm day you can smell the odor of honey from like 30 feet away, without the hives being opened at all. So, there shouldn't be a problem with starting robbing due to using the plastic crap.
Robbing is normally only a problem if the hive is weak, has low numbers, or their entrances are so large they are unable to guard them properly. You can use a little board to reduce the entrance size on the landing board to help prevent/stop robbing problems with a strong hive. Use that with a screened bottom in summer so they don't overheat.
