>>1210759Depends on your skill set and how much effort you want to put in to the task. You could get a jig system and rely on that, or do it freehand and learn to do it that way. A hatchet, machete, and pocketknife will need different treatments, as well.
I've got water stones, oil stones, diamond plates, strops, steels/rods, pocketstones, .... and usually keep everything ready to go by stropping. The stones are only needed for big jobs.
If I was starting from scratch, I'd probably get a Fallkniven benchstone with diamond on one side and fine ceramic on the other. It wouldn't be my choice if you need to reset an edge, but it will do most tasks.
