>>1462117I use a gardener's pruning saw for cutting. Much quicker and less energy than cutting with an axe, much lighter, folds away neatly in my pack, and I can cut anything with a diameter of twice the saw length. Very unlikely I'll want to cut anything more than 15" thick.
Then a knife for splitting or carving. An axe is better, but it's so much heavier and has fewer uses so it's just not worth carrying to me. Rarely do you even need to split wood for a campfire. You can just find sticks and branches that are the right diameter.
