>>1409747I got lucky with my nephew
>Give him the first fly combo I'd ever had for his birthday>Eagle claw 7 weight 8 foot fiberglass rod>Plastic noname click&pawl reel>Aircel 8wt line>tie him up a fly box; a few wooly buggers, Chernobyl ants, some tiny Marabou streamers, scud immitations, and soft hackles; more than enough to catch bluegill and bass>Hear from his parents that he's been catching panfish and baby bass with it>Finally manage to get a Saturday off work to go fishing with him-its the day after a cold front, it's barely 45° outside so fishing is going to be tough
>Tie up heavier soft hackles and a few 10 foot 5x leaders>Spend a few hours fishing with him, asking what he wants to do now and then or if he wants to go try somewhere else, etc>We each catch some small panfish, only ones that day who caught anything, Even out fishing live baitI think I succeeded in convincing him that standing outside in the cold for a few hours just to get a few dinks can be fun, so now I want to give him a better fly rod (basically $160 investment which isn't bad) because I don't want his gear to hold him back at all. I'm also going to take him to some bluegill beds with a 5 weight and really convince him that fly fishing is fun.
