Things the riders we rescued didn't have: Flashlight, adequate food/drink, topo map or GPS, radios, avalanche awareness/hazard recognition, or group management skills...
which they now have, after that incident, and seeing how our crew operated.
Ran into those guys again at a snowmobile event the fall after that incident, they got a lot more serious about mountain riding and ride preparation. I've greentexted their story here before, they're one of my success-stories as an educator.
