But if you are at a set up camp and planning to process a lot of wood, it just makes sense to get a maul.
A maul is just a more efficient use of energy. Sure you can use a felling ax, but you can split more wood with less energy in less time with a maul. This is especially true when you are splitting larger more gnarly stuff that is not perfectly straight grained and doesn’t just boast apart with a tap, then wedges are a great tool. And it’s not a good idea to drive metal wedges with the poll of an ax, the back side of a maul is meant to be used as a sledge.
