I think you should go on lots of hikes and adventures in the nature that you do have. Just minimalist camping, etc. You may consider asking a friend to drive you out to a wooded area, where you just stealth camp for a few days. I've found that most authorities really don't care about someone who is quiet and respects the land.
I'd also suggest getting skills that will help you be more independent of the economy. For example, get good at building houses, repairing gear, making things, or similar. For example: I'm working on learning about lathes, mills, and chemistry, so I can make my own ammunition from scratch.
Moving to a rural area and working on a farm for a few years would help. It would give you the necessary skills to be more self-sufficient as well. It might get you closer to nature as well.
In short, you don't need wilderness to be more independent.
