I'm interested in getting an external frame backpack. I've used the nylon camping packs before, but I have a tough time mounting the sleeping bag and (compact!)tent on there as opposed to inside. I was issued a 1982 pattern pack in the CF, and now that I have to return it I'm already missing how convenient it was, I could mount the tent+S.bag+ground sheet underneath the main pack right on the frame, and have plenty of room for food and etc. Used surplus packs and frames are around $200, so I'd rather find a cheaper alternative before I pay a premium for what was a decent bit of kit.
