Nods are becoming cheaper everyday. I own a PVS14 Gen 3 and a AGM thermal. The two paired are great for night hunting or animal watching. I commonly see aviation grade PVS14s going for $2K

You can hike anywhere at night. I night hike with comtac 3s and PVS14s with some guys. You will walk up on much more wildlife and you will see someone doing drugs in the woods. Especially if you live around a college town.
