The snow is sucky plus you have to take off your skis every time you cross a plowed road or path, or you'll scratch up the bases. If you do, you want backcountry or touring skis (shorter and wider), not race or skate skis.
I only do it because it's half a block to the park, or there's one 15 mile route I do where I need to ski a mile or so in the grass beside a busy road to close the loop and it beats walking.
