a big consideration is going to be sole stiffness. if you'll be spending a lot of time on roads or indoors you'll want softer soles. if you'll be in rougher terrain or on softer trails you'll want stiffer soles. i have a pair of vasque mindbenders that i bought as approach shoes specifically because they have the stiffest soles i could find, and they're fantastic on dirt trails, cross counry, talus hopping, and on 3rd/4th class climbing approaches, but they're absolute death on anything like asphalt or tile. i'll happily carry a 50 lb pack a full dy into the woods in them, but wearing them for just a half hour through a grocery store is extremely uncomfortable
