New zealander here.
First time i saw these, was going up wairere falls, a very well used track, that never becomes vague, that goes up and crosses a river a couple of times, up the mamaku-kaimai ranges,to where you can sit right at the edge of the waterfall, and look down on the whole of the waikato region.
On the way up there are big rockpiles, washed down by big floods, unmoved for god knows how long, and these people have gone off trail, climbed ontop of these rocks and made those silly bloody cairns/rock stacks. Apart from being an eyesore, and of no practical contribution, it just seemed to be the most selfish, arrogant thing i could imagine someone doing. Leaving a pointless personal marker, that serves no use, on something so beatiful thats been there and will be there longer than that persons fleeting and insignificant life.
Disgusted but mostly disappointed me.
