11 of 13 have hatched from batch 1. 1 egg doesn't show signs of pipping and isn't peeping. It doesn't have a rotten odor at least. It may be a Muscovy and may hatch next week with Batch 2 or need to be tossed out later. Time will tell Oddly enough, the 1st duckling to hatch was a Muscovy (black and yellow one.) The egg #13 pipped and was doing okay, but slow. However #13 died in the shell an hour or so ago.
11 of 13 = 84.6% success rate. Not bad for not doing this in a few decades.
I'll vent them today and attach leg bands to the males. Then it is on to stuffing the open incubator with Batch 4.
>>1537778>>1537807I don't name animals. Especially, ones that are non-pets. You can get into some serious mental trouble doing that on a farm. I know a husband and wife who have 3 children and a 400+ acre farm. They have cows, horses, goats, and tons of chickens. They named every single animal. Their intention was to raise most of them for meat, milk, sale, and/or eggs. They started this 10 years ago and haven't had the heart to get rid of a single animal, even for trade or sale. If you park your vehicle in their parking lot it will be covered in pygmy goats within 15 minutes. It is crazy.
