"Ham radio" is a huge field ... of all the licenses I have and have had, amateur lets me do the most. It's a /diy/er's wet dream.
The question pool/exam will go over the basics. Listen and see what goes on... especially if you have an HF rig.
Digital's cool (RTTY, PSK31). DMR's even awesomer.
Work satellites if you want. Talk to the space station. Bounce off the moon.
IRLP/EchoLink if you want to play with "VoIP ham radio".
A degree in EE doesn't hurt either.
