I just think in general national parks are more crowded and if you are willing to do a bit of research - state forests and national forests have a lot of great options for hiking and camping.
I don't mind crowds as long as they aren't loud and there is ample parking.
I did Dark Hollow Falls at Shenandoah NP and it was a full parking lot on a fall weekend when we got back from our hike.
There's tons of free dispersed campsites in national and state forest and they usually have maps of where they are online or you can email them and ask.
People just don't want to do research and "forests" (vs parks) usually tend to involve more dirt roads.
I like myself and I am comfortable with myself.
