I am a native yeah, my parents come from around Paris but they moved and I was born and grew up here up until I was 18, and I'm still here now just not year round anymore. I also lived in Montpellier and Toulouse when I was still a student so I always stayed down south
Carcassonne as a child with my sister was a god tier playground. It's really fucking touristy but still totally worth it, kinda like the Mont Saint-Michel in that aspect
I've never heard of anyone from the region saying it "Karr-Kah-shone", even in the Occitan pronounciation.
Although it wouldn't surprise me if he was indeed from here, old locals tend to "chew" their words
I've never been to Montségur but I did Peyrepertuse and Quéribus, equally impressive. I know some more well preserved or bigger castles in France but these are fucking dramatic with the mountains
