>>1803901The maps aren’t even that accurate to begin with. You’re better off now with crowd sourced maps with actual GPS tracks. With hand drawn maps, trails are “approximate”. Pic related is off 500ft in some places, either due to rerouted trails or just simply maps that aren’t drawn to +-20ft accuracy. If you really want the USGS to spend billions of dollars resurveying all the hiking trails in the entire country over the next 45 years, write your congressman. It’s entirely a lost cause though because trails are constantly being closed, opened, rerouted, ownership changes, etc.
Frankly, AllTrails has done a pretty good job wherever they get their data from, although it costs $15 a year or whatever.
