Take enough water to survive the day (more than you think you'll need), take enough food/snacks to survive the day, wear something comfortable and breathable. You will learn to layer, you will learn what foods your body needs to survive and perform in strenuous activity. Start small, keep your ambitions in check, but always strive further. I've found running to be a great exercise in trial-and-error when it comes to ambition vs ability, besides being great exercise for actually hiking/backpacking.
