>>147208Thanks much! I don't have anything but a shovel to move lots of dirt, but I have a lot of time on my hands. Does it have to be a minimum of an acre? I only own 3.5 acres here so that's what I've got to work with, about .7 of that is up the hill in my first photo. I wanted to make a somewhat large-ish pond using concrete and clay since I can get it cheap from my uncle, would it be advisable to use the concrete or clay on the bottom of the basin or would that be counter productive?
My grandma brought me a lot of prickly pears from her hometown in mexico last year, they rooted really well over the winter in pots and started offshoots this year. I had 10 plants but the ground squirrels destroyed 2 that I planted in the ground so I don't want to plant the rest until I can afford chicken wire or some other replacement to make root baskets for them.
I had no idea that figs would grow in the desert. I used to have a fig tree in san diego for about 15 years and I left two small figs I started from cuttings from it at my grandma's. I'll go pick them up and give them a try!
We tried pomegranates (3 trees) but the ground squirrels fucked those up too. We're going to buy cottonwoods yearlings and hope they take, they're expensive to haul here (no truck so I have to pay someone to drive them up the mountain for me) but I think it's worth it.
Once I get rid of all the ground squirrels I think I'll be able to try more plants, for now whatever I can try for cheap or free is best since I'm loosing some of it to the squirrels. Since there was no rain, nothing grew, and they're starving and starting to nibble even the toxic plants in an effort to eat.
>>147215Lots of gas, also supposedly illegal (?) to dig up manzanitas apparently. I'm thinking of offering to come dig up redshank nearby from people who have extras and don't want them though.
