Middle Earth was actually modeled off of Eurasia and mostly took part in the western European lands of Eurasia. Numenor was akin to Atlantis, the western men (high and middling men) akin to western Europeans and some survivors of Numenor, orcs were said by Tolkein to be of "the least lovely mongol-types", and dunlendings were dark folk that were fiendish and lived near the psedo-Germanish high and middling men of middle earth (thus either intended to be Celts or Slavs).
