>>2199591That's not quite how it works. The line weight is measured by grain weight of the first 30 feet of fly line. Put too light a line on your rod and it wont bend enough to cast properly. Put too heavy a line on and it will bend too much, which is occasionally done to make rods load and cast better with very short lines. Say you fish a 4 weight bust seldom cast over 20 feet, it might be worth putting on a 5 or 6 weight line to help that rod load at shorter distances.
On to rod weight and fish size, its debatable. If I was fishing in a body of water where a 12-14 inch fish is the standard and I still want 6 or 8 inchers to be fun I'd want a 4 weight. If there was a distinct chance of fish 20 inches and up I'd feel undergunned with anything less than a 6 weight, and if 12 inches was trophy teir and most fish were 4-8 inches a 2 or 3 weight would be ideal but that's getting in to specialty gear
