Otherwise, people would endlessly squabble about what is theirs, and people would be killed over these petty disputes. So private property is the natural solution.
That being said - I trespass all the time. I don't go too close to houses or private roads, I respect the land, and I leave the place just as good as I found it. No harm done. If I'm using the resources of the land, like hunting, fishing, or prospecting - THEN I would make sure to get permission. But you'll never catch me begging permission to just walk through someone's undeveloped land or pick a few berries.
