Butane's boiling point is 31 degrees F, meaning it's only useful for temperatures above freezing. If you want to bring a canister stove for subfreezing temperatures, you have to alter your gas mixture, like using isobutane or a propane/butane mix. You don't have to worry about that with liquid fuel stoves. For camping applications in environments above freezing, I prefer gas cartridge stoves for their ability to be instantly on/off (you must light a priming cup to warm the fuel lines in a liquid fuel stove).
