Not OP but in all seriousness though, say I come across unsavory or violent types while hiking or camping alone. What are some of the best things to do or try to avoid doing. I'm the kind of person that has success talking people out of confrontation rather than engage in fisticuffs, although if my life on the line I wouldn't hesitate to use my knife. The only thing I can think of is being 'ambushed?' like in the OP or coming across a group of people that have already seen me.
I live in Australia so i don't know how viable carrying a handgun would be, even so i have no experience with firearms other than paintball.
