French will get you quite far but in the really remote villages the men only speak Arabic and Berber, and the women only speak Berber (which is a good thing IMO because monolingual mothers ensure the survival of the language). I carried a Peace Corps textbook of the Tashelhit dialect just so I could avoid awkward silence while my hosts were preparing tea, etc.
