people mostly hated and hunted them because they killed their livestock, not out of fear. wolves don't just attack humans for no reason. actually no animal attacks humans for no reason.
a single wolf won't attack a human because it knows it might die. the human might die too. just remember a wolf is as tall as you are when standing upright. it isn't a dog. it will jump you and go for your neck and good night. you might protect your neck, and it will destroy your arm and you have around 10 seconds before it is done with your arm in which you can franatically try to kill it with your other hand.
remember there used to be a ton of them, mostly in packs. i don't think you'd stand any good chance against a pack armed or not.
