>>1290438Chooks are definitely easy to take care of, but typically you'd need to buy feed for them, (maybe just in winter if you're lucky) which can add up pretty quick. Plus roosters are a PITA, I've had a generation that was 2/3rds roosters and it sucked.
Veggies would be another idea; they only need water and add balance to your diet, but they aren't harvestable all year round.
It's honestly really hard to live off the grid without a bunch of cash to start off with. It's not impossible, but going 100% off the grid is pretty dangerous and <100% costs money.
