Living in Sydney, I can drive for one or two hours in any direction (or get the train) and end up in the middle of relatively untouched bushland. There are areas of the blue mountains where you can walk for days or even weeks without seeing a soul. I'd wager that the more remote parts of Wollemi and the southern Blueys haven't been properly visited in years, and these are less than 100km outside of sydney.
Tassie and the aussie alps are great wilderness areas too. Though of course, alaska takes the cake here.
I'd say we've got the euros beat though, especially on camping laws.
