If I wanted to make a small-scale, backyard aquaponics set-up, would there be any downsides to keeping the fish in the same tank as the plants grow in for the sake of compactness? If I'm not wrong this would also let me use just one pump instead of two.
The fish shouldn't damage the plants, I think, if I use carnivores. Pic related are what I was thinking of. They're small, basically everywhere in my area (i.e free), and carnivorous. They make their nests in plants, but I don't think they'll harm the roots too much - especially if I put a couple of water plants from the river I catch them out of on the bottom of the bin.
