UL is awesome. I grew up using traditional old school gear. Big packs, leather boots, trangias, double wall tents, etc. It was fine. I had a great time hiking. But modern UL gear is brilliant. It does everything the old stuff did, but weighs considerably less. It's tough enough, but yes some of the thinner materials do need to be used in a considerate manner, but it's not hard. The fact that I can head to high mountains, with a weeks worth of food, gear I know and trust to keep me safe and comfy, all in a bag that has a main body of <30L and a total pack weight of <25lb is a dream come true.
I get the hate UL induces, it's "trendy", and some people who advocate it's use are worse than born again christians, but honestly I can't understand the opposition to taking lighter kit to the backcountry.
You don't even need to use the gossamer thin DCFs, or sleep on a 1/8" torso legnth mat, or eat cold noodles, or spend 1000s of money to have a light pack.
I prey Austria, Spain, or Switzerland let tourists in soon. I'm dying to get high. Untill then I best keep working, studying, and training.
