Cairns are used as trail markers though, and were once used (maybe still used by native americans or isolationist scands far up north) as religious markers to designate a holy place. At least in the former case it would be pretty stupid to knock down a cairn marking a trail, especially in the mountains you can't tell where the trail goes without them. In the latter case, well, see pic related.
