>>179820It's not that hard to make a sturdy boat if you're reasonably good with your hands, have good plans and don't cheap out too much on materials. I'd just try it out close to shore before going on a long trip.
I'd go for stitch and glue or skin on frame for a first boat though (I like SOF, it's easy to build, light, pretty sturdy and easy to repair).
