I suggest West Virginia. As long as you dress warmly and you car can handle the roads you will enjoy it. I would only go if the weather is on the milder side and there is no snow on the ground (like now) unless you have winter tires.
People get stuck in blizzards sometimes. Make sure to check the weather carefully in winter for the mountains.
I just do day hikes. I enjoy them, yes.
For longer trails in WV you can put together all sorts of wacky loops particularly in the Cranberry Backcountry and surrounding areas that can last you a week or more.
The Allegeheny trail runs long distance from the WV/VA border I believe up to near the PA border. You can hike for 300 miles.
