>>107934If you've got some sort of "natural" (or ambient, I guess) lighting, take a few shots and dial in exposure/aperture/iso for that.
Once the background/ambient light is good, take another shot and paint the subject with the light. Sometimes you'll want to be near the optical axis of the camera, other times a more extreme angle will give you nice shadow effects.
Just shoot more. Only way to get better at it.
