I fight about once a week and train otherwise and have never had to defend myself in real life because I have always been able to resolve conflict peacefully (thank God and knock on wood) but what is the issue with having a gun? If you are a completely competent, rational and sane individual then your gun won't go off unless you pull the trigger and I would only ever do that as a LAST resort to save a life.
That said the only other way carrying a gun would lead to problems is if someone else grabs your gun, if you let that happen you deserve it.
