If you're just starting out then just go for a few overnight trips to get used to it. That way you can still bail out if your legs start acting up. One of the things I find most enjoyable is going for elevation, that way you won't go too fast and if you get tired it's all downhill on the way back. Even though downhill can sometimes hurt your legs more. Honestly if you have leg problems trekking poles are great to save you some pain, fuck the larpers complaining about them, it's all for your own comfort.
