Mine is a pre-1982 (never looked up the exact year of manufacture), with no manual safety and it ejects straight up, rather than at an angle. Has a scope mounted on the side of the receiver. It works just fine and I wouldn't call it flimsy by any means. The post-82 rifle I handled that had the cross-bolt safety? Felt like absolute crap in my hands.
A Marlin 336 made prior to the acquisition by Remington in 2007 is a very nice rifle.
