yeah you could try to shoot them but that takes time and luck you can't spare, and any other trap or snare you can make isn't going t be as reliable, or humane.
the only thing i would have to recommend, between the two traps (rat and mouse) is that you be very careful where you set them.
mice and birds and feast all day off a rat trap without setting it off, and squirrels/chipmunks/bunny wabbits will be maimed but not killed/almost def escape a mouse trap.
