Hiked a 40 mile loop in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park last weekend (over 4 days). I wrote a report, but /out/ is more interested in gear and larping than experiences and actually going outside.
Pic is from the last day. As I hiked to a higher elevation I left the protection of the surrounding valleys, and ended up on the 6,000+ high section of the AT. Here the environment is a coniferous rain forest, dominated by fir and spruce pine, and received 85” of rain per year. Visibility was limited to maybe a few hundred feet at noon, with temps around 50° and winds blowing at 5 to 10 mph.
Humidity was 100% and you can clearly see a heavy mist billowing through the forest. Everything was damp; the trees, my shirt and pants, my shoes, the air, the ground… but my lips were dry as hell and chapped.
