state and national parks generally have to pay for camp sites, which provide amenities like water/wifi/electricity. obviously this doesn't count as camping. very rarely they will allow for backpacking/actual camping in certain areas marked for "backcountry camping".
national forest and BLM land is generally free for use like camping, shooting, minor foraging, etc. they may have campsites that you are free to use and generally don't require clearing, but otherwise just hike on the trails until you want to make camp and find a location far enough from the trail and water sources. pack out your trash or else i will find you.
