Don't buy things that you'll just want to upgrade out of soon (if you're looking to upgrade within a year you bought the wrong thing to begin with and you might as well have eaten your dollars). Weight cost and value, weigh cost and value, weight cost and value! If you buy something expensive that's only a little better than something cheep the terrorists have won.
Also, as a guide, the things you absolutely don't skimp on are your sleeping rig and your bad weather supplies (cold & rain gear). Everything else you prioritize to your personal needs and interests, but whatever you choose to endure the cold, rain, and have a nice night's sleep (tent, bivvy, hammock, tarp, socks, rain coat, etc) get adequate stuff right off the bat.
