Was on a trek in the evening with 5 friends, as things got dark we took a shortcut that we haven't taken before. Found this huge pit in the ground, going down at a relatively steep angle, but shallow enough that it would be easy to go down and up. Seems to be made of concrete, with metal beams running along the sides under more concrete. We plan on checking it out with proper equipment in the next few days. We can hear water running at the bottom, however far down that may be. Just totally shocking to be walking on a path in the middle of the woods, look to the left, and see this. Looking down it gave total heebie jeebies.
Any ideas what it might be? I am in a coal mining region, and this was no more than 1.5 or so miles from the local coal strippings. Best picture I have.
