Also, you shouldn't just go around knocking over every cairn you see because they may serve a purpose besides entertaining a bored hipster. They serve as landmarks for navigation, sometimes mark graves, etc. If it looks old, don't fuck with it.

For starters, cairns are usually used to mark obscure trailheads, game trails, good locations for a campsite, etc. They also might mark very old graves from the original pioneers and frontiersmen of the area. If you see them in the water (this is especially common in Scandinavia), they're a very old aid to navigation that was used to mark shoals
