Grandpa used to tell me "there are fishermen who know how to buy fishing equipment and there are fishermen who know how to catch fish" so I have always been wary of buying anything, especially if it didn't have a clearance sticker on it.
That said I finally broke the $50 mark in my gear bag. The stuff in its packaging came from a $25 giftcard that I got for Christmas saving for the three kastmaster spoons that I got out of a clearance bin for $1 each. I didn't really need it, but I brought my little sister and cousin with and let them pick out everything but the two big spoons, trying to get them excited about fishing and all that. The rest of the stuff is either cheap Walmart clearance bin or found on the ground/in a tree/still in a fish (that orange rapala hard bait at the bottom of the line).
