Biker nomad loser here, bit of backstory, been a shiftless dude since I was a wee lad and haven't stopped moving since. Best advice I got is know what makes your 2wheel beauty tick. Basic tools and mild know-how is a good place to start but know your gear inside and out. Treat her well because let's face it that's as close to a /out/gf as you're gonna get. Preparation is your friend or enemy depending on your views and work ethic I'd say. Don't get lost in the sauce as soon as something goes awry, you make as many options as you want so cant stress enough to really know your machine and all the dumb small shit that happens with it. There's a lot of great bike recommendations being tossed around this thread and that's great but whatever bike you have will get you there if you're determined enough. Also saw a dude suggest a moped as an option and he's absolutely right just a different hand of cards. I'll include some pics of my cross country trip I did for shits and giggles on my old scooter was a gnarly 14 days but fun. Other than that just use your time with the community braincell well and think shit through. Thanks for reading y'all hope this helps
