Cold Steal always beats the shit out of their gear so the tempering is normally spring tempering so it won't simply snap. As durable as steel tempered to spring steel is, it isn't as hard as normal tempering and won't hold an edge as long as typical knives.
Proper use and care is paramount over showing off how badly you can abuse your tool. Tool abuse is the height of poor judgment. Batoning knives is tool abuse.
