Batoning isn't particularly useful in most situations but can come in handy on occasion.
The fact is that most of you "survival hobbyists" like to practice with seasoned wood. Two problems with this. One, seasoned wood is many times harder to split than fresh wood, which is why knives break so often when batoning. Look at that image of all those broken knives (I'm sure it's in this thread somewhere) and you'll see that like half of the pictures have seasoned wood in them. Two, there's next to no skill involved and therefore no need to "practice." Anybody who does is just being a neckbeard.
