Using diamond "stones" on guides will get you a more consistent, fast and cleaner edge.
Freehanding on stones, is a good skill to have in any case, as far as type and brand again, I'd go with diamond plates, DMT has what you need, big sharpening stones or small double-sided folding files to take into the woods with you, they've got it. Biggest plus to the diamond stones/files is that you can use them wet or dry and with water or oil, they clean up easy and don't require soaking.
Also, don't let people tell you you *have* to have Xquantity of stones and work through all those grits, if all you need is a working edge, you can go right to honing and stropping after you've hit the apex.
