Being transparent is a huge advantage when map reading and plotting courses.
Strictly speaking you shouldn't put the compass directly on the map and draw bearings from it but everyone does regardless because these compasses have a bearing which you can mentally subtract the declination from.
This one doesn't actually hold zero but it was my grandfather's and I have an identical one.
